Davos World Economic Forum 2023

Davos 2023 is the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) first in-person annual meeting since the start of the COVID pandemic. The yearly gathering sees business, political and civil society leaders convene in the Swiss mountain resort with academics, journalists, and celebrities to discuss global economic agendas.

Among Wednesday 18^th January highlights from the annual winter gathering:

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said the world is unprepared for the next global health crisis.

A U.S.-EU race to offer clean-energy subsidies will speed up efforts to combat climate change, a senior U.N. official said.

Labor Secretary Martin Walsh said the U.S. needs foreign workers to fill a labor shortage.

Driverless trucks will soon hit the highways, predicted Volvo Trucks’ head of technology.

The UBS chairman cited underappreciated financial risks facing international banks.

The chief executive of London Heathrow Airport said he expects global travel won’t be back to normal until the end of the year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the World Economic Forum that Western supplies of tanks and air defense units should come more quickly and be delivered faster than Russia was able to carry out its own attacks.

Zelenskyy spoke by video link before Western allies meet at the Ramstein air base in Germany on Friday with the focus on whether Berlin will allow its Leopard battle tanks to be supplied to Kyiv to help drive out Russian forces.

The Davos WEF will continue all week.  There will be plenty of business leaders at Davos – people who make big decisions that can affect everyone.

But that’s not the whole story. Approximately one-third of participants are from civil society – including groups that campaign about poverty and inequality, the environment, and human rights – as well as academia and the media.

We wait to see if and how these decisions will affect the weeks and months ahead!
