Stocks finished lower on Friday after the September jobs report missed Wall Street estimates. The U.S. economy added 194,000 jobs, well below the 500,000 expected.
Oil will also be in focus this week as it briefly topped $80 per barrel on Friday.
It is Columbus Day and while the stock market will be open for normal trading hours, the bond market will be closed.
The headline report on Tuesday will be the JOLTS report, the latest data on job openings, and the National Federation of Independent Business’ business optimism index.
Figures on U.S. inflation will be closely watched on Wednesday while the Federal Reserve is set to publish the minutes of its September policy meeting, during which officials said they would begin stimulus tapering by the end of this year. The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are to start their annual meeting on Monday, but controversy over IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva has already overshadowed proceedings.
In the UK, data releases will focus attention on the health of the economy amid growing expectations for rate hikes as inflationary pressures mount.
David Frost was accused of using an unassailable “red line” to create a “destabilising stand-off” with Brussels amid indications the government was edging closer to overriding parts of its own post-Brexit agreement.
Keep an eye on the GBP on Tuesday to see how this speech will unfold.
